South Africa = Southern California?
I just got back from an amazing outreach to share Jesus' love in South Africa. It was the most wonderful experience I could have imagined. I expected culture shock, and to really feel like a fish out of water. However, I was in the very South of Africa, the actual country South Africa, in a city right by the beach. With the mountains, ocean, and winter temperature, it looked like Southern California. I felt completely at home.
However, the biggest similarity was in the heart of people. I got to work in a township (shacks in a set area) where people's lives were being run and destroyed by drugs, alcohol, sex, AIDS, rape, and violence. Yet how is that differrent from America? We may hide it better sometimes behind the country's wealth, but underneath it all is the same heart of poverty. We wear a mask of being an open country, but have closed hearts. Here, there was nothing seperating the people's heart from reality. I saw hunger, not just physical, but of the soul. How people are trying to feel that hunger with all the above things only to come up empty. I saw lives changed as God shared His love through Jesus in me. Praise God, that His love is known in any language, around the world, plain for all who will have eyes to see, ears to hear, and hearts to receive!
